This antique post card depicts the original Oceanic draw bridge. Opened with great fanfare in 1891 the 123 foot span rotated on central axis allowing ships to pass through with ease.
It is the very bridge which is the site for ” Graveyard Shift at the Oceanic Bridge” , chapter nine in 13 Ghostly Tales and Yarns of the Navesink River.
Although the picture shows an idyllic scene as a steamer passes through the open bridge, that is not the case when a young bridge tender comes face to face with a midnight gale and a steamship that didn’t exist.
